Spending a semester abroad
offers young students the opportunity to learn a new language and see
the world, but college exchanges also help students grow as people,
improving their self-confidence and independence. The most popular study
abroad destinations for American students are in Europe, but many also
choose programs in Africa, South America and Asia.
United Kingdom
The
United Kingdom is the most popular destination for American students,
attracting 12 percent of all study abroad participants, according to CBS
News. The UK offers two big advantages: Dozens of different
universities have opened their doors to American students, and they all
use English as the language of instruction. Many students find travel to
an English-speaking country a great comfort as they get their travel
boots wet for the first time, but the UK's proximity to mainland Europe
offers bonus opportunities for many students. Thanks to low-cost
airlines and cheap trains, many students can live in London or Dublin
and fly to Paris or Berlin for a long weekend.
Italy
Italy
attracts thousands of study abroad students from every discipline, but
the country's rich cultural heritage makes it especially popular with
history, literature and art history majors. Programs in Italy dominated
Abroad 101's rankings of the best study abroad programs in the world,
nabbing three of the top 10 slots. Students in Rome, Milan and Florence
enjoy access to some of the world's finest museums and best wine. Many
Italian universities offer specialized programs in English, so prior
knowledge of the local language isn't necessary.
France
According
to CBS News, France is the fourth most popular study abroad destination
in the world. A program in Provence earned nearly perfect marks from
Abroad 101's survey of international students. France's popularity among
students is no surprise given that French is one of the most commonly
studied languages in the United States. Students in France also have
easy access to the rest of Europe, making weekend trips to Spain, Italy,
Germany and other popular tourist spots.
China
China
is the world's most popular study abroad destination outside Europe and
North America, according to BBC Travel. It attracts more than a quarter
million foreign students every year, many of whom study Mandarin
language and Chinese history. China is an intimidating travel
destination for many Westerners due to the difficult language, the
unfamiliar writing system and the unusual cuisine. However, study
programs in China offer big financial savings compared to those in
Europe. They also offer the chance to learn the most popular language in
the world.
